Start with what's underneath. Leaving the park isn't defiance — it's a hard transition, and four-year-olds don't have the brakes for it yet. So you stop trying to win the meltdown and start preparing for it.

Decide the plan before you go: one warning, then you leave, every time. Say it once — "Two more slides, then we walk to the car" — and then follow through without the second, third, and fourth reminder. The meltdown may still come. That's okay. You stay steady and keep moving.

That line is bait. When you argue back, you've handed him the fight he was after — and now you're two kids arguing. The leadership move is to not take it.

You don't have to match his energy or win the comeback. Hold the boundary with fewer words and a steady tone: "You don't have to like it. The answer's still no." Then stop talking. The eye-roll isn't the emergency. Problems get only as much attention as they deserve.
